Asheville, North Carolina
Chapter #74

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Patti Quinn Hill

PROGRAMS: Lynn Forbes
Program for October 25, 2011, November New Member Orientation and December Workshop
A Look Into Fall Colors Using Fall Materials by Judy Melton instructor in the Ohara School - Demo 10/25/11.
Judy will be using autumn seasonal plants and flowers to inspire us in our next program. She will offer Ohara arrangements that capture the brilliance and intensity of the changing fall spectrum of colors. As an example, a landscape arrangement can reflect the colors and natural transformation of fall plants. Other more minimalist Ohara arrangements can display the vivid colors of autumn as well. Be sure to be present to enjoy Judy's wonderful seasonal designs.
November...no regular meeting. New Member’s Orientation- 11/15/11.
On December 6, 2011 Laura Felt has agreed to teach a Holiday Washi Ornament Workshop for us at the FAC at 10:00 AM. Laura will be supplying all Washi paper for those who sign up at the next meeting. This will be a free workshop. Laura's holiday present to Ikebana International!!!!! Thank you, Laura.
Special thanks to each of you who have generously given your time volunteering to assist during set up both before and after our programs and workshops this year. Without your assistance and willingness to give your time to II we would not be able to have our wonderful programs. Also, very special thanks are extended to each of our talented presenters who have so graciously shared their time and talents with us during the last two years. It has been a privilege to work with each of you.
FALL EXHIBITION AND DEMONSTRATION: Terri Ellis Todd, TNCA Liaison
I have heard many positive comments about our exhibit at TNCA. Many have said that the exhibit was our best ever. I really appreciate the excellent participation from all exhibitors and volunteers. I would like to make special note of all of the extra time and effort by the teachers who made the larger designs for the upstairs lobby/gallery area with such little time to preview the pictures on the wall. We definitely had our largest crowd ever for the Saturday demonstration. I was honored to have so many teachers from other schools in the audience along with many of my students and friends. George Briggs, director of TNCA, made a special effort to come into the library when many of our II members were breaking down the exhibit Monday morning to tell us how much he enjoyed the exhibit and to express his appreciation for our ten years of participation. Thank you all for your continued support of our annual fall exhibit.
HOSPTIALITY: Clark Ward
It is not too early to plan to volunteer starting in February 2012. I will be passing around sign-up sheets for you to agree to help with setting up before our meetings and breaking down and cleaning up afterwards. Get first choice on when you would like to volunteer.
The arrangements that we have on display in the gallery upstairs have always been so appreciated by the Folk Art Center. It is a good way for us to get PR because there is a sign next to our arrangements that advertises our meetings. This is a very nice way to give thanks for our free use of the auditorium and I hope that you will agree to take a week or two to have an arrangement there.
NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION: Judy Melton
As the Chair of the New Member’s Orientation, I urge all new members as well as our regular members to attend our New Member’s Orientation at the lovely home of Maggie Storey on November 15 at 2:00. (We will send out a map.) As we did last year, we will offer information about the schools of Ikebana that make up the Asheville Chapter of Ikebana International. A representative from each of four schools—Ichiyo, Ikenobo, Ohara, and Sogetsu will present an introduction to the gathering. We will also have refreshments. I hope that all can attend. It’s a great way to learn about the different schools as well as getting to know each other.
Please let me know, if you want to attend. jmlton@clemson.edu
